High profile scope mounts most commonly refer to 1.93” centerline height scope mounts (meaning it places the center of the optic at 1.93 inches above the mounting platform). This contrasts with 1.50” centerline height for standard scope mounts. Some vendors also offer scope mounts in 1.70” or 2.26 centerline height.
High profile scope mounts offer several advantages over standard height scope mounts.
Pros:
- They allow for a more natural and upright head position when shooting upright. No need to hunch over with your neck.
- They provide more clearance over the front of the receiver allowing for placement of NV devices, lights, or other accessories to the front front of your optic.
- They allow more spacing for accommodating bulky headgear like NV goggles or masks.
Cons:
- More uncomfortable when shooting from a prone position
- The increased height over bore make it difficult to sight in the reticle on close range targets
- Prevents you from co-witnessing the reticle with your front iron sight
